The Great Commandment

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT / THE GOLDEN RULE

Texts, including the numbering are taken from The Gospels and Rabbinic Judaism: A Study Guide by Rabbi Michael Hilton with Gordian Marshall OP

Text 1.  Sifra on Leviticus 19: 18

“And you shall love your neighbour as yourself.”  Rabbi Akiva says, This is a great principle in the Torah.  Ben Azzai says “This is the book of the generations of Adam” (Genesis 5: 1) ‑ this is an even greater principle.

FROM Text 3.  Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 31A.

There was once a certain gentile, who came before Shammai. He said to him,

“Convert me, on condition that you teach me the whole Torah, while I am standing on one leg.”

He thrust him away with the builder’s measure in his hand. He came before Hillel, and he converted him, and said to him,

“What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour ‑ this is the whole Torah, ‑ all the rest is commentary on it ‑ go and learn!”

Text 4. (i) Matthew 22:.34 ‑ 40

34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together.  35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him.  36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”  37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and all your soul, and with all your mind.  38 This is a great and first commandment.  39 And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.  40 On these two commandments depend all the law and prophets.”

(ii) Mark 12: 28 ‑ 34

28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?”  29 Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’  31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’  There is no other commandment greater than these.”  32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher: you have truly said that he is one, and there is no other but he; 33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbour as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”  34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.”  And after that no one dared to ask him any question.

(iii) Luke  10: 25 ‑ 28

25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?”  27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.”  28 And he said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.”

Text 8.  Matthew 19. 16 ‑ 30

16 And behold, one came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?”  17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good?  One there is who is good.  If you would enter life, keep the commandments.”  18 He said to him, “Which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honour your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”  20 The young man said to him, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack?”  21 Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.”  22 When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

23  And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  24 Again  I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”  25 When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”  26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  27 Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed you.  What then shall we have?”  28 Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.  30 But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”

Text 9.  Mishnah Sanhedrin 10.1

All Israel has a share in the world to come, for it is said (Isaiah 60.21) “Your people also shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land for ever: the branch of my planting, the work of my hands that I may be glorified.”  And these are those who have no share in the world to come: he who says that the resurrection of the dead is not from the Torah; he who says that the Torah is not from Heaven, and an apostate.  Rabbi Akiva says: Also he that reads the heretical books, or that utters charms over a wound and says, (Exodus 15.26) “I will put none of the disease upon you which I have put upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord who heals you.”  Abba Saul says: Also he who pronounces the Name of God with its proper letters.
