Nehemiah arrived in Judah between 445 and 440 BCE. He made a night inspection and found the city and Temple in disrepair. Because of the danger from surrounding peoples, (mostly the Samaritans), he had to guard and arm his workers, (Nehemiah 4:16 to 4:18): "Half of my servants worked on construction and half held spears, shields and bows and coats of mail ............ Those who carried burdens were laden in such a way that each with one hand laboured on the work and with the other held his weapon. And each of the workers had his sword girded at his side while he built." |
