Conventional explanations of the choice of date for the Temple's rededication assume there were no 'miracles' that could have explained it.

They don't satisfy the concerns the Maccabees would have had over offending the Lord with a 'strange fire'.

In fact, there were several signs in the heavens.

 

Firstly, Halley's comet made one of its periodic appearances.
It was visible over Jerusalem in the autumn of 164 BCE.
It may even have been recorded in the Book of Daniel.

 

Secondly, there was a total lunar eclipse on October 3rd.

Thirdly, there was a grouping or conjunction of 3 planets with the comet in the October evening sky.

 

How would these events have looked in Jerusalem?
