Exodus 25 -27 Gives instructions for the making of the tabernacle or sanctuary, a special
prefabricated and portable tent in which God's presence could dwell amongst the people.
At this time people in the ancient Near East were skilled in spinning and weaving
and beating gold and silver into elaborate designs.

25:3 ff reads "And
this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold and silver, and brass, and blue and
purple and scarlet and fine linen and goats' hair" Scarlet dyes came from the cochineal insect. Purple came from murex
shellfish and was expensive. Skins came from rams or from seals or porpoises, (caught in
the Red sea).
In the tabernacle was the ark of the covenant, which held the tablets of the law
that God had given to Moses.
The altar of incense and the gold mercy seat, (where the blood of the sacrifice
was sprinkled), lay before the tabernacle.
There was also a 7-branched gold candelabrum. |
