The Babylonians destroy King Solomon’s Temple, (about 4 centuries after it was built).

Disperse Jewish population of Palestine.

537 BCE

Cyrus, Prince of Persia,  rules Babylonian empire.

Allows Jewish volunteers to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple.
The Ark of the Covenant and other sacred objects are lost but the prophet Haggai convinces the people that a new temple will end their miseries.

520 BCE

Construction starts under Zerubbabel.

515 BCE

Reconstruction of Second Temple completed.

Less grand than the original but attracts many pilgrims to the Festivals.
445-440 BCE
Nehemiah finds city and Temple in disrepair.

Fixes it in 52 days, (Nehemiah 4:16 - 18)
