Al Wolters was
interested in the use of the word zohar in Daniel 12.3. The actual passage is shown below. |
 |
whmskylym yzhrw kzhr hrqy
wmsdyqy hrbym kkkbym lwlm
wd |
It is
usually translated as:
And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the
firmament
And those who turn many to righteousness like the stars for ever and ever
|
Wolters looks at the structure of
the verse, the common usages of the words and at parallel passages in the Bible and
elsewhere to argue that Daniel is talking about a comet. (Click here for his detailed arguments).
 |
There is much parallelism
in biblical writing. As the noun, "stars"
appears in the second
line, the abstract passage "the
brightness of the firmament" in the first
line should be translated as the concrete "lights
of the firmament."
|
 | Wolters suggests that this was a play on words with hidden meanings.
Those who refused to give in to Antiochus were trying to teach the others to stick to
their faith and they were "wise shining like the
lights...."
|
 | Further, as the root zhr normally
means "to warn." Wolters argues that
the passage refers to actual celestial " warning
lights...." - Halley's comet?
